LIFELINES is about one of nature’s favourite organizing principles: fractal branching. It is about the the pattern of pathways used to sustain and energize life whether at the microscopic level, or traversing our planet. Our blood vessels delivering nutrients to our cells; the waterways that course across the earth sustain every living thing; and of course the branches and roots of the lungs of the earth, trees

Trees are a powerful visual analogue for all of these things and more, plus they deserve to be highlighted for their own sake. Trees are an ancient symbol for life, which at a time when massive wildfires are decimating vast tracts of forest, needs to make a return, along with our sense of wonder at what they do for us, the power they have to make this planet livable. And wonder too at their beauty.
So in these photo-digital tree-based images I have used a number of strategies (including symmetry, shape, intersections, and colour) as ways to transform ordinary photographs of trees into something special, to better convey how extraordinary they really are. Above: Glow 2
