Group Show 'RED': Held Over Until the End of March!

1/24/2016

Picture
A fun group show united by one colour and one size (12" x 12").
I'm still working on my brand-new painting for it. Hope you can make it out even if not for the opening (which I can't make either, as I'm teaching).

Sure to be cheery if you're feeling winter-dreary!

My Latest Appearance on Rogers TV

12/2/2015

Yes, they invited me back! "They" being Ry Howitt, producer of Night Time, the talk show I was on this spring. You can catch my segment if you have Rogers Cable and live in the Peel Region of Ontario; Rogers Cable 10 this Friday at 11pm.

This week I talk about my social media portraiture project #dailyheroes, something I intend to write about on my blog as well, in time for the airing of that show, so stay tuned!

I only wish I could watch it myself, but we have no Rogers Cable TV at our house.

On Sunday I Was a 'Myseum of Toronto' Expert

9/29/2015

Picture
This past weekend was Culture Days in Toronto, in the whole province I think. There was a lot going on at Neilson Park Creative Centre, in all the studios, the gallery and outside in the open: storytelling, kids' activities, yoga, outdoor drawing... and Myseum Toronto, who set up under tents to collect people's stories with and without associated objects which they documented.

The "Myseum" is a fantastic project, worth finding out more about which you can do by clicking here to go to their website. I was one of their "experts"
(their term not mine!) facilitating the sharing and recording of the stories, with the able assistance of others who recorded everything on iPads.

We couldn't have had a more perfect day for it and in addition to all the interesting conversations with lovely people, I was thrilled because they had a table where you could make your own buttons. I have a thing for buttons and have wanted one of those button making presses since I was about nine years old! I call the button above 'Heart is Where the Home Is'.

The Big 'Chains Unlinked' Mural Drawing Is No More...

9/14/2015

Today was takedown for my Chains Unlinked exhibition at the Art Gallery of Mississauga. Hard to believe 2.5 months has passed so quickly!

After the sculpture installations were taken down the biggest job was washing off "Boxed In #21", the big charcoal figure that occupied almost the entire marquee wall.

It was sad to see her go and I had to record her passing into history with some time-lapse photography. I also did the first wiping away, with a wet mop. Thanks to Van for doing all of the real de-install work and to Shellie for inspiring the face.

Tracing the History of an Idea – a Recent Artist Talk

4/20/2015

At the beginning of April I had the pleasure of returning to speak to the Markham Group of Artists.

My talk, entitled 'Subject to Limitation', was about the origins and experimental nature of my process, and then tracked the history of one idea: how it was born, developed and grew into many branches and forms over the course of years.

Although it was just a talk (with slides) it felt action-packed!

Loads of good questions came from the packed audience, and I took along a couple of pieces for everyone to get up close to and touch at the end. I'm a tactile person myself so I always appreciate being able to touch or poke something, even with gloves on.

Many thanks to the Markham Group for their warmth and enthusiasm, and to Linda Walesch for the photographs (and Sharon Kirsh for one photo).

Exhibition Opening at You Me Gallery in Hamilton

1/8/2015

Uncomfortable in My Own Skin (diptych), 2014-15, 24" x 12", acrylic skin photo transfers on wood panel with acrylic.
Picture
Opening night for YMG Invitational 2015 show at You Me Gallery, 330 James St North in Hamilton. On through February 9, 2015.
My first – group – show in Hamilton! YMG Invitational 2015 is a show in which artists have invited other artists.

I am there thanks to Sarah Collard, a prolific painter and accomplished muralist. We met during the 2011 Mentorship project at the Burlington Art Centre (now Art Gallery of Burlington).

I am showing a brand-new piece, pictured here, made of acrylic skin image transfers of my own photography and digital photo-based work. Acrylic skins have a unique ability to capture qualities of human skin.

The show is on January 9 through February 9, 2015 at the You Me Gallery, 330 James Street North in Hamilton, Ontario.

Opening reception this Friday night (January 9) starting at 7pm. Hope to see you there!

UPDATE: Lots came out on a cold night!
It was cold, but gallery owner Bryce Kanbara had hot chocolate and coffee on hand to warm people up. Here are a couple of photos from the evening. We were too busy talking during the busiest period, so these were shot later in the evening.
Picture
I'm having a rest here (foreground) toward the end of the evening. There is a variety of work in the show, including: printmaking, drawing installation; bronze relief sculpture; photography; a collage of actual seeds (many hundreds of them!); mixed media sculpture/assemblage; artist book; a beautiful shadow box with layers of printed and intricately cut acetate and mylar... and of course my little photo-based acrylic skins.
