Photos from the 'Night Time' TV Interview

5/16/2015

In April I made my talk show debut, which I really enjoyed. I found the whole experience interesting, from getting my hair and makeup done (by my multi-talented niece-in-law Bailey) to realizing how much the camera sees the whole time to finding ways to answer questions that are short and simple enough without becoming meaningless.

I took some recent work in with me and was able to plug my upcoming exhibition at the Art Gallery of Mississauga (which opens July 2, 2015 and runs until September 13).

Night Time is a program available on Channel 10 to Rogers Cable subscribers in the Peel/Caledon area and will repeat a number of times (Friday nights at 10pm).

Thanks to Michael Charbon for being such a hospitable host!

Final day for 'Workspace' exhibition: Sunday March 1

The impact of the much-larger-than-life heads and hands in the two Pressed/Pressing diptychs can only be experienced in person. The intimate size of the Dream Home triptych contrasts sharply and makes a nice transition to the warm intimacy of Tonia Di Risio's furniture-housed videos.
These are the final days to see the 'Workspace' exhibition at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga.

Artists Jenna Faye Powell, Tonia Di Risio and I examine the physical and psychological spaces of work, roles and expectations, whether at the office or in the home.

My photos here are focused mainly on my work but the mix makes the show interesting.

Jenna Faye Powell takes a fun, even witty, look at office space and corporate environments. I particularly love her free-standing sculptures of large plants typically found in offices.

Tonia Di Risio's video work focuses on traditional food preparation in the kitchen (featuring various female relatives in Italy making traditional family dishes) and is placed in or on familiar-feeling home furnishings. She also has a large multi-channel projection that is really enjoyable to sit and watch.

Megan Press did a great job of curating the show, so I hope that if you haven't seen it yet you'll be able to by Sunday. If you do, please don't forget to sign the book, and share your thoughts here in the comments.

This Saturday You Can Visit the 'Workspace' Show with Kim!

2/5/2015

For the many who could not attend last Thursday's opening because of the snow storm or other commitments, I will be at the gallery (2nd floor at The Living Arts Centre in Mississauga), this Saturday, February 7 from 2:30 to 4pm (I might manage as early as 2:00). It would be lovely to see you :-)

A Bustling Opening at Propeller Last Night!

At Propeller's opening reception last night for 'Migration', an official project for Nuit Blanche in Toronto. Here I am with my piece 'Departure and Transformation'.

Last night's opening at Propeller was a busy one! Both rooms were packed and at one point the noise level was so high I had to step outside for some relief.

I found my piece – Departure and Transformation – halfway back on the left in the front room. Phyllis Gordon (who was part of this year's 'SPA' program in Haliburton) has a mixed media drawing in the back room, though I missed her at the opening.

We didn't have a proper camera so this is a shot from my iPod. Fortunately, snapd Toronto also took photos, for their November issue, so I'll post something when that becomes available.

They're doing something interesting on the back wall of the back room: they've drawn a map of the world there and supplied pens for everyone to draw the migration path they've taken to get to Toronto. I included my father and his great-grandfather in my route, since that related to the story behind my work.

The show runs until the end of Nuit Blanche. Nuit Blanche runs from 7pm Sat Oct 4 to 7am Sun Oct 5, 2014. Propeller is open from 6pm to 6am that night.

I hope you'll be able to visit the show!

My first time showing in Nuit Blanche!

9/18/2014

Just got the exciting news today that I've been accepted into the Migration show at Propeller, on Queen St West in Toronto, (see the e-vite below). This marks the first time I'll be showing as part of Nuit Blanche!

Part of the application process was to submit a statement responding to the theme of Migration, to a maximum of 500 words. I kept mine under 400. It was an interesting experience and I discovered how many different interconnected ideas I have around that theme, many of which never made it into the final statement.

I'll reproduce the statement in my blog, sometime on Sunday. Meanwhile, here is the location information:
Propeller
984 Queen Street West
(a few doors east of Ossington on the N side)

I will try to attend the opening reception. Let me know if you're thinking of coming, either for that or the big all-night event!
