Altered Books in Mixed Media
A book, (especially hardcover), is a perfect object:
portable, compact, amazingly extensive surface area to play with, sequential, dimensional, visual content to respond to, such as typography, layout grids, white space and possibly illustrations and photographs. In this online course, we look at slides of examples from contemporary artists, and my own samples, to explore the wide range of possible approaches, effects and techniques. I demonstrate and discuss the characteristics and uses of a variety of media, the benefits of working in mixed media, and delve into the design- and art-thinking needed when working on an altered book project. Possible media for working into your altered book include: painting, drawing, cutting, stencilling, gel printing, image transfer, stitching and collage, off the top of my head. I cover some of those topics but not all. You are welcome to bring in any media you have and like working with as part of the mixture :-) Each class runs for about 2.5 hours. Possible sources for old books include: castoffs from friends or family; thrift stores; libraries (just ask if they have any they are getting rid of) and garage sales. Hardcover is best, text books can be a great source. This is your chance to draw all over a book! Or paint, print, write, collage, perforate and more! And to make a unique and personal artwork. Level: Intermediate art-making experience, and up. This can be your first altered book or your tenth. |
