Subject to Limitation
Barriers, limitations – boundaries set up by others either to keep us out or to confine us within – they leave an impression on us, on our bodies, on our psyches, and on our lives.
Subject to Limitation is an ongoing multidisciplinary project that grew out of a series of Boxed In drawings I made in 2010 that provoked more questions in me about what barriers felt like inside a person and how to make objects and images in the world that could express and represent different aspects and embodiments of that feeling, whatever the source. Using the links below (or via the menu) you can select a specific series or sub-project. The linked pages are still under construction but some have plenty to look at already.

Boxed InThe series of drawings (and solo exhibition) that started this whole project by raising questions I am pursuing still.

Expanding MediaThe first group of works (some exhibited at the Art Gallery of Burlington) where the questions raised by Boxed In exploded into widely varied media, formats, scale and focus.

Fences as BarriersChain link, so ubiquitous in the world, feels the most universal; while white picket fencing, evokes and questions the bonds of home and domestic life.

ContainmentDomestic boxes, e.g. a motley collection of found drawers. Familiar objects in an unfamiliar context: piled as if dropped and abandoned, glowing faces and solitary figures, lit from within.
