Photoshop 1:
An Introduction for Artists

Another of my most-requested course topics!

Adobe Photoshop is the state-of-the-art digital photography, image-making and -transforming environment for artists, designers and photographers. It can be a digital darkroom or digital art studio.

Its enormous capabilities also make it challenging and intimidating to approach as a beginner, so in this workshop, artist and longtime designer Kim-Lee Kho will introduce you to the fundamental features and skills, to equip you for further exploration.

This course is the first in a series, each increasing and expanding your technical and creative skillsets and possibilities. It is also useful if you’ve always been curious about Photoshop and wish to explore further on your own.

SUITABLE FOR:
Artists who are at the beginner level with Adobe Photoshop but understand how to operate their computer, such as:
  • creating and locating folders (ie basic file management),
  • locating and transferring photos from their phones to their computer
  • how to email photos and how to download photos from email

The four classes include practice images, handouts for some topics, resources, demonstrations by me and actions and skills for you to try out and practice.

Live classes were recorded to make replay videos available to registered students for at least a year after recording.
The videos give you time to re-watch, review and practice the skills and techniques at your own pace.

TOPICS WILL INCLUDE:
  • the relationship between image size and resolution and why they matter (eg correctly sizing images for calls for entry)
  • navigating the menus
  • what's in the tool bar and where to find tool options
  • learn some basic – and incredibly useful – photo adjusting techniques, so you can share brighter, crisper images, whether on social media, in your art portfolio, or simply snapshots that you treasure or wish to use as reference
  • preliminary creative tools, such as making creative colour changes and some simple drawing
We will also have a private Facebook group for you to share homework, experiments, questions and ideas.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
  1. A fairly recent (or older but higher-powered) computer – desktop or laptop (a tablet is not adequate for Adobe Photoshop CC) – please see the sidebar "About Adobe Photoshop CC" for more about this.
  2. A subscription to Adobe Photoshop CC – (see the same sidebar referred to above).
  3. An up-to-date copy of Adobe Photoshop CC installed on your computer before the course begins.
  4. You may find it convenient to have a printer so you can print out some handouts in order to annotate them during class or just refer to them while working in Photoshop on your own.

ABOUT ME:
I am a professional multidisciplinary artist, a very experienced instructor in both art and technology, with over 10 years' experience in the first, and literally decades in the latter.

As a designer I started working with Adobe products back in the early days of the company, and now as an artist I am known for my photo-based digital artworks made mostly using Photoshop.

The live sessions are now over, but the course can still be purchased in video replay form:

COST:
Video replays (4): $100
for one-year access to all four replay videos, the private Facebook group, and any handouts (in pdf format).

TO REGISTER:
For either payment method, please indicate "
Photoshop 1 replay" in the comment line with your payment, otherwise I will not know what you are registering for! Thank you :-)

Above: a photo straight out of the camera; after some basic adjustments (doesn't that look a lot better?); changing the colour of first one then two flowers; transforming the photo into partly greyscale while part remains full-colour; and adding in some simple drawing in colour (two colours used in this example).

The final image shows additional artistic effects that we may or may not have time for in this course but can cover in the next one.
