NEILSON PARK CREATIVE CENTRE, Etobicoke (Wednesdays, January 16–Feb 27, 2019, 1:00–4:00pm) Figurative Art: Drawn & Beyond I'm working on some new ideas for this term of working from the model... Not a classical life drawing class! Work with a model as a doorway to exploring artistic thinking, design, tools, processes and surfaces, plus ways of seeing. Get more out of your tools and materials and try interesting combinations. Each term is different, each week stretches your creative muscles and build your skills. Drawing-based but includes mixed and other media. Materials fee $15, payable to the instructor in the first class. Level: adventurous, whether beginner, intermediate or advanced Registration is now open: Click here for more information. ★ONE-DAY WORKSHOP MARKHAM GROUP OF ARTISTS, Markham (Saturday, January 19, 10am–3pm) Adding Dimension to Your Painting: Creating Texture and Impasto in Acrylics Enrich your paintings by pushing the paint out from the flatness of the canvas or panel into delicious relief surfaces we can feel with our eyes, (like work by post-impressionist Vincent Van Gogh through l’automatiste Paul-Émile Borduas to contemporary painter Kim Dorland). In this two-day workshop, build vivid surfaces in acrylic paint by developing your skills to create rich and varied textures, sculpt the paint and build up impasto marks. Also learn how to extend the open time so you can work back into the existing paint layer. Instructor Kim-Lee Kho will guide you through creative and technical – and fun! – aspects of working with and modifying acrylics to enhance the third dimension in your work. Check the materials list to see if you have the acrylic mediums you’ll need for this workshop, and if not, Kim will have some available at a discount from retail pricing. Materials fee $10, payable to the instructor. Registration is now open: Click here for more information. ★ONE-DAY WORKSHOP ARTEMBASSY, Toronto (Friday, February 8, 10am–4pm) Working in Layers with Contemporary Mixed Media Techniques In a combination of structured exercises and personal exploration, you’ll layer, distress, work into, and interfere with your mixed media and images to integrate and reveal contrasting visual material which can include painting, drawing, collage, transfers, embedding etc. Be inspired and informed by physical samples and images, supported by one-on-one consultations and group discussion. Level: adventurous, whether beginner, intermediate or advanced. Materials fee $15, payable to the instructor, covers a variety of prepared materials and tools you will need for the projects (in addition to those you will bring). Ranging from exquisite to outrageous; representational to rejections of it; the imaginary to photo-based; and working with interference, disruption, flux and complexity; the range and diversity reflects the complexity of our contemporary world. My upcoming weekend workshop at Neilson Park Creative Centre, Contemporary Portraits: Beyond Likeness, will focus trying a variety of approaches that are suitable for a workshop format. Call 416-622-5294 for registration information. ★WEEKEND WORKSHOP (Sat & Sun May 4 & 5, 9:30–4:00) Neilson Park Creative Centre, Etobicoke Contemporary Portraiture (It’s Not About the Likeness) Working with a model, we will combine artistic thinking, process, and sometimes unconventional tools and materials can be used to create creative, adventurous and contemporary portraits. See lots of gorgeous examples from artists working today – many of them Canadian! – focusing on their painterly vocabulary and unique ways of working. This presentation relates closely to Kim-Lee Kho’s own approach to painting and she has taught numerous popular courses and workshops on related topics. She will bring some physical samples of selected processes for you to take a closer look at. During this 4-day course we will look at a variety of transfer approaches, including some tried and true plus (I hope!) a couple of new techniques I am currently testing in my studio. Work with layering and combining them with other media to experiment and build new work (or revive old!). Classes will include a combination of live demo, physical samples, examples from contemporary art and some materials for you to work with. Click here to register or for more information SUMMER WEEK-LONG INTENSIVE One of my most popular courses Acrylics – Explore, Express, Experiment Monday July 22 – Friday July 26, 2019 9:00am to 4:30pm Haliburton School of Art + Design (link) The most versatile of all paint media, acrylics can do almost anything you want. Through the magic of acrylic mediums you can change the appearance, behaviour and characteristics of acrylics in surprising ways, from pourable glazes to texturized and transparent impasto, layered encaustic-like effects to sculpted surfaces. In this intensive, materials and process-based course, a variety of acrylic mediums, physical processes and techniques will be explored. These may include drip, scrape, scratch, scumble, tickle, pour, squeeze, sculpt, roll, collage, layer, making skins and embedding objects. You will also investigate tools - how to select, use and customize them, with particular emphasis on unconventional choices. Materials fee and list. All levels and abilities are welcome (including advanced or pro), the only prerequisite is an open mind and an adventurous spirit. WEEK-LONG INTENSIVE Another popular course Acrylic Glazing & Encaustic Effects Monday July 29 – Friday August 2, 2019 9:00am to 4:30pm Haliburton School of Art + Design (link) From the Old Masters to cutting-edge contemporary artists, the use of transparent paint glazes is a tradition that has come a long way. In this process and materials-based course you will learn the language of transparent colour in acrylics, how to mix and work with glazes, which mediums to use when, and the importance of dilution, sheen and thickness. Glazing will be complemented with the rich surfaces and translucent depth of encaustic effects in acrylics. In structured exercises and your own creative explorations you will work with layering, blending, painterly marks, impasto surfaces and combine acrylics with other media to create depth and invite light into your paintings. Materials fee and list. Suited to students who have studied acrylics with me in the past, and anyone interested in enriching their acrylic painting with mediums, focussing in-depth on glazing and encaustic effects, exploring their technical aspects and creative potentials.
