FALL
★ONE-DAY WORKSHOP

(Sunday, September 15, 9:30am–4:00pm)
Contemporary Drawing:
Markmaking and More with Tools You Make Yourself

Make your marks truly unique by making your own truly unique mark-making tools! Using a combination of man-made and foraged natural materials, you’ll explore mark-making approaches, create visual textures, layered effects and extend your "vocabulary". Exercises balance personal exploration with structured design prompts to harness the vitality of your new marks. You’ll leave with a quiver of new techniques plus a journal of your discoveries!
Registration is now open: Click here for more information + materials list.

★ TALK
THE RED HEAD GALLERY, 401 Richmond St. West, Toronto

Artist Talk:
Heartspace Solo Exhibition

Heartspace is a multimedia exhibition, continuing my ongoing exploration of the human heart: as repository for emotions, as metaphor, as physical structure; using it as a gateway to what our hearts mean to us.
In this talk I will provide some insights into the ideas, methods, materials and sources for the work included in the show, probably peppered with anecdotes and humour. I will also take questions.
This will be my first solo show as a member of The Red Head Gallery collective. The exhibition runs October 30–November 23, 2020.

Courses, Workshops & More: Fall-Winter 2018/19

7/21/2018

If we haven't met yet, you might like to know that I teach workshops, give talks, live demonstrations and critiques as well as jury exhibitions at the invitation of numerous community art groups in Ontario. I also teach more regularly at: Neilson Park Creative Centre in Etobicoke,  in various programs for Haliburton School of Art + Design, (part of Fleming College), and at Visual Arts Mississauga.

Through demonstration, presentation, examples from contemporary art history and physical samples you can see up close and even touch, I strive to create a rich and stimulating learning environment where it’s safe to experiment and take risks.

In the studio, whether teaching or doing my own work, I am interested in how technical knowledge combined with experimental process can lead to new ideas and generate fresh, inventive results!

TALK/PRESENTATION FOR THE ART GUILD OF SCARBOROUGH
(October 11, 2018, 7:30–9:30pm)
This Is Not Photography:
The expanding (and sometimes surprising!) use of photos by contemporary artists
[This talk is about the ways artists use photography and the emergence of photo-based mixed media as an important form in contemporary art.]
Using photographic material and playing with how to use it, is a deeply contemporary way to work with imagery and perception and the way we experience the world now. Starting with photography’s development, we will move into the uses of photography by contemporary artists, including in visual artworks that are not “photography”. While not well-understood, photography’s role in contemporary art is rich, diverse and can be surprising – even hidden!
As a multidisciplinary artist, presenter Kim-Lee Kho works in various photo-based mixed media forms herself including prints, video, sculpture and textile. Kim also teaches popular courses and workshops in photo-based mixed media, exploring the various technical challenges as well as the vast creative possibilities.

North York Senior Centre

Contemporary Painting: An Extended Vocabulary of Paint
Many contemporary painters are working with an expansive vocabulary of paint, using (and pushing) the properties of the paint and its application in ways that can really surprise us, offering us rich tactile experiences, a vivid sense of the artist’s hand as well as fascinating optical effects. See lots of gorgeous examples from artists working today – many of them Canadian! – focusing on their painterly vocabulary and unique ways of working with paint. This presentation relates closely to Kim-Lee Kho’s own approach to painting and she has taught numerous popular courses and workshops on related topics.
