SUMMER
WEEK-LONG INTENSIVE
One of my most popular courses
Monday July 13 – Friday July 17, 2020
9:00am to 4:30pm
Haliburton School of Art + Design
Acrylics – Explore, Express, Experiment
The most versatile of all paint media, acrylics can do almost anything you want.
Through the magic of acrylic mediums you can change the appearance, behaviour and characteristics of acrylics in surprising ways, from pourable glazes to texturized and transparent impasto, layered encaustic-like effects to sculpted surfaces.
In this intensive, materials and process-based course, a variety of acrylic mediums, physical processes and techniques will be explored. These may include drip, scrape, scratch, scumble, tickle, pour, squeeze, sculpt, roll, collage, layer, making skins and embedding objects. You will also investigate tools – how to select, use and customize them, with particular emphasis on unconventional choices. Materials fee and list.
All levels and abilities are welcome (including advanced or pro), the only prerequisite is an open mind and an adventurous spirit.

Acrylic Glazing & Encaustic Effects
From the Old Masters to cutting-edge contemporary artists, the use of transparent paint glazes is a tradition that has come a long way. In this process and materials-based course you will learn the language of transparent colour in acrylics, how to mix and work with glazes, which mediums to use when, and the importance of dilution, sheen and thickness.
Glazing will be complemented with the rich surfaces and translucent depth of encaustic effects in acrylics. In structured exercises and your own creative explorations you will work with layering, blending, painterly marks, impasto surfaces and combine acrylics with other media to create depth and invite light into your paintings. If we haven't met yet, you might like to know that I teach workshops, give talks, live demonstrations and critiques as well as jury exhibitions at the invitation of numerous community art groups in Ontario. I also teach more regularly at: Neilson Park Creative Centre in Etobicoke,  in various programs for Haliburton School of Art + Design, (part of Fleming College), and at Visual Arts Mississauga.

Through demonstration, presentation, examples from contemporary art history and physical samples you can see up close and even touch, I strive to create a rich and stimulating learning environment where it’s safe to experiment and take risks.

In the studio, whether teaching or doing my own work, I am interested in how technical knowledge combined with experimental process can lead to new ideas and generate fresh, inventive results!

TALK/PRESENTATION FOR THE ART GUILD OF SCARBOROUGH
(October 11, 2018, 7:30–9:30pm)
This Is Not Photography:
The expanding (and sometimes surprising!) use of photos by contemporary artists
[This talk is about the ways artists use photography and the emergence of photo-based mixed media as an important form in contemporary art.]
Using photographic material and playing with how to use it, is a deeply contemporary way to work with imagery and perception and the way we experience the world now. Starting with photography’s development, we will move into the uses of photography by contemporary artists, including in visual artworks that are not “photography”. While not well-understood, photography’s role in contemporary art is rich, diverse and can be surprising – even hidden!
As a multidisciplinary artist, presenter Kim-Lee Kho works in various photo-based mixed media forms herself including prints, video, sculpture and textile. Kim also teaches popular courses and workshops in photo-based mixed media, exploring the various technical challenges as well as the vast creative possibilities.

Acrylic Painting: Thick & Thin

Best of all, you can combine the effects to create the richest results!

Instructor Kim-Lee Kho will provide some materials so you can fully enjoy the content of this workshop and benefit from it. A basic materials fee of $10 will cover that. The necessary acrylic mediums will also be available at a cost of $3 per 4oz for acrylic polymer gloss; $5 per 4oz for gloss gel (prices subject to change depending on supplier costs of course). Glorious Surfaces!
Intermediate–Advanced (or anyone who has been in an acrylics course with me)
Layer up colour, pattern, shape, marks and visual texture to make rich, exciting surfaces on paper (mostly), canvas and even objects. We’ll dive into many ways of working with acrylics (stamp, print, stencil and roll, in addition to brushes) to create variety and contrast and to make it more fun! You’ll leave this workshop with a pile of surfaces you can use in collage, home decor, gifts and cards. $30 materials fee includes a lot of tools and things to play with but not basics such as paints (see list for clarification).
Registration is now open: Click here for more information.

Drawing-based but includes mixed and other media. Materials fee $15, payable to the instructor in the first class.
