3/6/2019

Picture
A Full Heart is my biggest solo show so far in my career. Full of recent and brand-new work in various media, it explores the human heart from various angles: structural, emotional and metaphorical.

I've written a blog post about preparations for the show, click here to read it.

All the details can be found there, but the key location information is here as well.

Exhibition Update: Take 2, January 7-27 at Neilson Park

1/19/2019

Picture
Digital mixed media work, with and without photo elements, by Kim-Lee Kho and Helen Jones, showing at Neilson Park Creative Centre January 7–27, 2019.
Take 2 is an interesting variation on the annual instructors' show in the main gallery at Neilson Park Creative Centre.

This year they asked each instructor to select a student (whether from NPCC or not) to exhibit with as a pair. Each of the instructors and the students then not only supplied artwork but also statements that address how each influenced the other. A fun idea!

The results are worth seeing. Helen Jones and I are exhibiting work that is produced digitally or as a hybrid, whether digital originals that incorporate physical media that's been digitized, or physical media that incorporates digital elements.

Our artworks relate to courses and workshops I have taught, such as: Contemporary Mixed Media, Image Transfers and Photo-based Mixed Media. I will be teaching a 4-day intensive on image transfers in June, as well as Traditional into Digital Studio in the spring term. Click here to go directly to my Teaching page.

I'm pleased to say that two of my pieces have sold so far!

Hope you can make it – see map below for location information.

The Closing Reception will be Sunday January 27, 2–4 pm.

Another wonderful In Situ Festival, put on by Creative Hub 1352 (the main focus of The Small Arms Society) in Mississauga, and their wonderful team, volunteers and board, and most especially artistic director Heather Snell who gave us artists the physical and psychic space to be at our best and combine to create an environment of artistic ferment!

I've written a blog post (part one) with my first thoughts about 'Hearts in Place', my room installation at the festival, which was held at the Small Arms Inspection Building (click here to read) – loads of photos!

Thanks to the many, many friends, colleagues and students who came out!
Thanks also to Jennifer Vong for the photos on this page.

It's Back: In Situ II Multi-Arts Festival, Nov 8–10, 2018

Site visit and selection day. Heather Snell, director of the In Situ II event and artistic director/curator of the arts content, shown here meeting with sculptor Derya Ozparlak to discuss location options for her work. Behind and to the left of them you can see the renovated main space of the formerly derelict building, now called the Small Arms Inspection Building. Photos above and top: Kim-Lee Kho, 2018.
Here's a sneak peek at the room I will be installing for this year's In Situ II multi-arts festival: Making Space, Making Place.

One of my favourite events of all time was the first In Situ festival in 2018, held at the then-abandoned factory space known as the Small Arms Building in Mississauga.

Produced by the Small Arms Society which saved the building from demolition, they were also instrumental in persuading the City of Mississauga to take over ownership of the site (renamed the Small Arms Inspection Building) which means the building is now partially renovated and features heat and running water (and bathrooms!), none of which was true for the first In Situ. Not that that held us back!

When I update this post I will show you a photo of the room I am creating an installation for, happily it's in the old, unrenovated wing – I do so love the decrepit beauty of it!

Finally, I am planning to do live drawing again each of the three nights from 8-9pm.
Hope to see you there!

Radiants: A Show of Paintings, Now Open – Extended to May 25!

4/17/2017

Picture
My new solo show is now open, through May 25, 2017 at Otto Art in The Junction neighbourhood of Toronto.

Opening reception: Thursday, May 11, 7–9pm
Artist talk: Saturday, May 13, at 2pm

The exhibition features new and recent paintings featuring circles, radials and often radiant colour as well. The signature piece (not shown) in the window of the gallery is 36" x 36" and I am so pleased I managed to finish it despite getting way behind schedule due to a bout of bronchitis from which I'm still recovering.

Looking forward to showing you my paintings in this great little gallery in one of the burgeoning neighbourhoods of Toronto, (so full of interesting contemporary galleries that my last Gallery Walk & Talk visited there).

Hope to see you there!

Instructors' Show at Neilson Park until March 19, 2017

3/3/2017

Picture
Neilson Park Creative Centre in Etobicoke is currently exhibiting the work of their many instructors, including me, and the work (and its range) is wonderful to see!

If you missed my show at the Culinaria Restaurant in Mississauga, six of the new paintings from that are in this show, along with several of Kal Honey's beautiful pieces.

I hope you get a chance to see it and if you do please leave a comment below and let me know what you thought, what your highlights were.

A Big New Installation at the Extraordinary Three-Night 'In Situ' Festival

10/5/2016

I am thrilled to invite you to visit me at In Situ, a three-night multi-arts event located in the gorgeously dilapidated, abandoned industrial space called The Small Arms Building.

Back in World War II it was used to manufacture small arms (the mother of one of my students actually worked there!).

The big spaces have very high ceilings and fabulous factory-style windows. There are many other rooms too, from welding booths to offices.

I will be among 30 or so artists, including dancers, DJ, musicians, pop-up performances of various kinds, video art, visual art and conceptual craft... who knows what else?

I have been given an entire room to work with, about 20ft by 50ft, and I can hardly contain my excitement!

One brand-new work
will be a photo-based sculpture and light installation. I've been wanting to make it for
a few years now and realized this event
would be the perfect opportunity.

There are some existing pieces that link thematically, at least one of which hasn't been shown in Ontario before.

And there are other new pieces, also linked thematically, that I have dreamt up especially for this setting.

I will be working night and day on this project because I think it will be really special – the setting alone! – so I am taking on new approaches and formats that extend but grow from the work I've been doing.

If I have any strength left I will also be doing live, large-scale drawing for some of the time.

Please join me.
It's a special event at an extraordinary location – an opportunity that doesn't come along very often!

Let me know when you know when you'll be attending and I will do my best to be there in person for you. (It's a lot of hours, so I can't be there for all of them.)

One Busy, Art-Filled Weekend!

10/4/2016

What a weekend! We started on Saturday morning by setting up Kal Honey's booth in the rain at Trinity-Bellwoods Park for the Queen West Art Crawl. Poor Kal was operating on only one hour of sleep!

We had a couple of hours of rain but it was grey and quite cool so there was not a great turnout. Outdoor events like this are so dependent on the weather.

Despite discouraging conditions we had friends  and other visitors to our booth, especially later in the afternoon when things picked up.

After packing up all the art I dragged poor, exhausted Kal over to Red Head Gallery so I could see my brand-new piece (which I had barely managed to look at before delivering it) hanging in their Nuit Blanche show Bright Lights at Night.

The gallery was already busy when we arrived but not packed the way it typically becomes during the peak hours – we were there a little early on purpose.

There was a lot of work (and a real variety) so it was hung salon-style. I could have wished for more even light on my piece but I could also see the challenge they had lighting the show in general. It was nice to see it out in the world. Many thanks to those who paid it a visit!

On Sunday we arrived at Trinity-Bellwoods to glorious sunshine and our first spotting of the famous albino (or more likely, white genetic variant) squirrel there (see photo bottom left).

Set-up was so much easier in that weather and with a lot more sleep under our belts, and except for one shortish period of rain, the weather remained excellent all day. As a result the crowds arrived so we had a very busy afternoon, lots of interest, some sales and more visits from friends and family (photo lower right).

In addition to all the art and craft on display there was a stage where a wide variety of live music was performed, by bands and djs, with the gaps filled by the radio station Indie88 who was on-site the whole weekend.

The beer garden was located very near the stage and there were always people dancing in front of the stage, especially when the TD Dancers (provided by the key sponsor) were out onstage or interacting with the audience.

All in all a pretty good first experience doing an outdoor art fair. Maybe next year Kal will apply for the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition...

New Work Showing for Nuit Blanche (this Weekend!)

9/30/2016

Picture
This Saturday/Sunday (October 1, 7pm through to October 2, 7am) is Nuit Blanche in Toronto, the amazing annual contemporary art event.

Along with the official event there are other things going on, including the Queen West Art Crawl which itself features original art & artists, live music, beer garden and a kids zone. The heart of QWAC is the outdoor art exhibition in Trinity-Bellwoods park.

I will be helping out my husband Kal Honey at his booth (J11) in the outdoor art show, 11am–6pm on both Saturday and Sunday. Please drop by and say hi!

Also, already up and showing at The Red Head Gallery (401 Richmond Street West), I have a new multi-image photographic piece entitled "Winter Storm, Canadian Highway". The gallery will be open until 1:00am Sunday morning for Nuit Blanche.
